‘My mental health wasn’t great’: Go Compare ad star Wynne Evans reveals his five stone weight loss after deciding to lose weight when he was ‘struggling to get up the stairs’
Go Compare ad star Wynne Evans has revealed his impressive weight loss after deciding to lose weight when he was “struggling to get up the stairs”.
The 51-year-old TV star has been a fixture on screens since 2009 in his operatic alter-ego Gio Compario, and is known for his signature tuxedo and ruffled moustache.
And during an appearance on This Morning, Wynne explained why he decided to make a lifestyle overhaul, admitting his “mental health hasn’t been good for the past five or six years.”
He said: “I feel great, it was calories. I’ve always been fat, I thought ”I have to do something”.
“I had trouble washing and climbing stairs. My mental health hasn’t been great for the past five or six years, and it’s really helped.

Wynne has documented his weight loss on social media and previously revealed his height has increased following the collapse of his marriage and the loss of both of his parents.
The father-of-two went on to say that he continued to work on radio during the difficult times: “My show’s slogan is ‘cheer up Wales by one o’clock’ but I was going through the worst of depression. clinical depression’.
“I would think about (suicide), I would try to do it… I couldn’t see a way out; I couldn’t think of a way I would ever be happy again.”
The Welsh tenor had a successful career before starring in commercials.
He was cast as Ubaldo Piangi in the 25th anniversary production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall and has sung at 30 international rugby matches in Wales.
“I had no idea the commercials were going to be so massive, but they completely changed my life,” MailOnline said.
“Now I have financial security, a record deal, a bit of fame, anything you dream of.”
The ads featuring the opera singing mascot were previously named the number one most annoying ads in the UK.

Famous for singing the catchy jingle, Wynne was surprised to discover how negatively people reacted to his character.
He said: “It bothered me at first because it’s horrible to read that people don’t like you, but nobody came up to me and said ‘I hate you’.
“I thought they were going to stop advertising. But I called the advertisers and they loved it.
In 2011 there was a Facebook page called “Go Compare, Go Compare, Give me a bat to kill the t**t at Go Compare” which attracted 257,000 members.
