Georgian MMA star Ilia Topuria has revealed a bizarre weight loss tactic that involves him drinking wine before fights.
The 26-year-old has established himself as one of the UFC’s most promising featherweights in recent years, moving up to ninth in the division standings.
He’s won all 13 of his professional MMA fights, including five in the UFC, although his unique weight-loss practice may not catch on.
In an interview with ESPN, Topuria revealed that he drinks wine before fights as it helps him lose weight from dehydration.
While sipping from a solo red mug and laughing with friends, the fighter said, “It’s something that’s always worked for me, every time I’ve lost weight.” It helps me feel good and I follow traditions.

“I’m dehydrating more than usual and it’s helping me lose weight.” “Tomorrow I’m going back to the sauna, I’m almost my weight, I’m going to lose a few more grams.”
Topuria is currently gearing up for a headline fight against Josh Emmett Saturday night in Jacksonville.
It will be his first fight since defeating Bryce Mitchell via submission in December and his first since fulfilling a fan’s request for a punch in the stomach at a meet-and-greet in April.
His latest win gave Mitchell his first loss in 16 MMA fights and the American has since claimed the UFC gave him no choice but to go for him.
Topuria seemed confident in his chances against Emmett as he continued, “I’m ready to celebrate the win.” We celebrate all that God gives us.
“I’m thankful for all these moments to enjoy, I feel blessed to be surrounded by good people.”
“What else can I wish for? People always strive for success. I strive for happiness because to me success means being happy with myself and I already have that so I am grateful.”
