Diptyque Orpheon Eau de Parfum is a subtle, powdery, musky fragrance that becomes more vanilla over time, while jasmine blooms low in the background, adding a more general feeling of florality. I wish I had more to say – this was an easier fragrance journey and perfect for those who prefer scents that don’t change much over time! These are the notes:
- Top notes: juniper berries
- heart notes: jasmine
- base notes: powdery notes, cedar, tonka bean
fragrance development
It opened with the bite of juniper berries – crisp, cool and piney – with vanilla to support it, offering a subtle sweetness before jasmine blossomed sweetly in the background. The powder showed about 10 minutes after the scent settled on my skin, giving it a powdery, musky characteristic that seemed to overwhelm the other notes. Anything that was in the opening became vague and diffuse, causing them to lose their nuances and come across as a more general “clean” scent.
Orpheon was linear on my skin; it had a subtle undercurrent of jasmine and woods dominated by powdery musk that became progressively more powdery and vanilla (the woods lost) by the second hour, which lasted until drying. Being linear isn’t a bad thing, as long as you enjoy it. I also noticed that it feels particularly close to the skin and has a more subtle effect, especially for an eau de parfum.
Application
For testing, I used 1/3 of a 0.7ml sample vial dabbed on the bottom and top of my wrist area on my left arm. I used an unscented moisturizer before applying the scent as this is also my swatching arm (aka being incredibly parched at a certain point) as I found the scent didn’t last well here otherwise.
longevity
This almost seemed like a skin odor from the initial application. At best, it hovered two to three inches above my skin and with no sillage. It wasn’t faint per se, as I could easily spot it on my skin if I put my nose close to my wrist. Compared to other eau de parfums I’ve tried, including some from Diptyque, it lasted shorter and was hard to tell after wearing it on my skin for 8 hours.
personal thoughts
I’m not that familiar with this family of fragrances, although it’s not the type of scent I’m personally drawn to, and if it had a little more projection and longer life on my skin it would appear nice enough for something soft, slightly floral and “clean” with a powdery musk.
